Death of an Idol

On Thursday, June 24th 2009 @ 2:26pm PT, pop icon Michael Jackson was pronounced dead. Most statistics figure that between 250,000-300,000 people die every day world wide. Why do we give more attention to one and not all the rest? How does someone place value on human life? We see in 1 Tim 2:3-4 that God’s desire is for all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. Each time a life is extinguished, the Lord takes note. He has placed the same value on each and every human life.

I don’t want to debate whether Jackson was a Christian or had a relationship with his creator. I would rather focus on those of us who are still living. The first command that God gave is found in Exodus 20:3-6:

3 “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.

When Jesus was asked what is the most important of all the commandments, he replied that we must Love the Lord with everything we have and THEN love our neighbor as ourselves. I would argue that if you don’t love God with everything you have, then you will find something or someone else to give that love to. Michael Jackson may have been the king of pop, but Jesus is the King of kings, lets always try and keep that perspective and make the most of every opportunity we have to share the truth of Jesus with everyone. Remember, every life is important to God!

A World of Confusion

The more I watch the news and listen to culture, the more I realize our depravity. The apostle Paul warned Timothy of this type of society, explaining that “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,” (2 Tim 4:3 NAS) and “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.” (2 Tim 3:2-5 NIV).

Nothing illustrates this better in my mind then the writing of Steve Turner.

Creed

by Steve Turner

We believe in Marxfreudanddarwin

We believe everything is OK

as long as you don’t hurt anyone

to the best of your definition of hurt,

and to the best of your knowledge.

We believe in sex before, during, and

after marriage.

We believe in the therapy of sin.

We believe that adultery is fun.

We believe that sodomy’s OK.

We believe that taboos are taboo.

We believe that everything’s getting better

despite evidence to the contrary.

The evidence must be investigated

And you can prove anything with evidence.

We believe there’s something in horoscopes

UFO’s and bent spoons.

Jesus was a good man just like Buddha,

Mohammed, and ourselves.

He was a good moral teacher though we think

His good morals were bad.

We believe that all religions are basically the same-

at least the one that we read was.

They all believe in love and goodness.

They only differ on matters of creation,

sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation.

We believe that after death comes the Nothing

Because when you ask the dead what happens

they say nothing.

If death is not the end, if the dead have lied, then its

compulsory heaven for all

excepting perhaps

Hitler, Stalin, and Genghis Kahn

We believe in Masters and Johnson

What’s selected is average.

What’s average is normal.

What’s normal is good.

We believe in total disarmament.

We believe there are direct links between warfare and

bloodshed.

Americans should beat their guns into tractors .

And the Russians would be sure to follow.

We believe that man is essentially good.

It’s only his behavior that lets him down.

This is the fault of society.

Society is the fault of conditions.

Conditions are the fault of society.

We believe that each man must find the truth that

is right for him.

Reality will adapt accordingly.

The universe will readjust.

History will alter.

We believe that there is no absolute truth

excepting the truth

that there is no absolute truth.

We believe in the rejection of creeds,

And the flowering of individual thought.

If chance be

the Father of all flesh,

disaster is his rainbow in the sky

and when you hear

State of Emergency!

Sniper Kills Ten!

Troops on Rampage!

Whites go Looting!

Bomb Blasts School!

It is but the sound of man

worshipping his maker.

Steve Turner, (English journalist), “Creed,” his satirical poem on the modern mind.  Taken from Ravi Zacharias’ book Can Man live Without God? Pages 42-44

The apostle Paul referred to this type of person as those “who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.” (2 Tim 3:6b-7 NIV). It’s time to wake up and smell the spiritual napalm destroying our culture. We all need to be on our faces before God and pray for his mercy. Make the most of every opportunity to share the love and salvation of Jesus Christ with as many people as you can and maybe we can truly see some positive change. God bless America … please!

Knowing God … really knowing him.

I was listening to the radio the other day and heard a comment about the reality that many Christians get knowing Jesus (having a relationship) confused with knowing about Jesus (having religion). Below is a link to a blog that illustrates this well.
